旧英国植民地であった香港は、1997年7月1日に特別管理行政区域として中華人民共和国を支配するために復帰した。 キャントンの南東に145キロメートルある広州珠江河口に位置し、面積は1,040平方キロメートルで、推定人口は630万人である。
首都はビクトリア州。 極東の商業中心である香港の自由港は、中国と環太平洋諸国のために設計された物品の輸送先である。 物品物製造と観光は経済の重要な要素となっている。
香港の島は1839-1842年の最初のアヘン戦争の終結時に英国に譲渡された。 しかし極東で活動しているロンドンと英国の商人たちは「不毛の岩」の買収を馬鹿にしていた。 九龍半島とストーンカッター島は1860年に譲渡され、植民地本島の大半を占めるいわゆる新領土は1898年に英国に99年間リースされた。
香港の貨幣は、英語と中国語の2カ国語でできている。 珍しい1941セント貨幣はいくつかの出荷で香港に発送された。 その中の一つは日本人の手に渡った。 もう一つは英国人に渡り、三つめは敵の行動中に沈んだ。
Hong Kong, a former British colony, reverted to control of the People’s Republic of China on July 1, 1997 as a Special Admin-istrative Region. It is situated at the mouth of the Canton or Pearl River 90 miles(145 km.) southeast of Canton, has an area of 403 sq. mi.(1,040 sq. km.) and an estimated population of 6.3 million.
Capital: Victoria. The free port of Hong Kong, the commercial center of the Far East, is a trans-shipment point for goods des-tined for china and the countries of the Pacific Rim. Light man-ufacturing and tourism are important components of the econ-omy.
Long a haven for fishermen-pirates and opium smugglers, the island of Hong Kong was ceded to Britain at the conclusion of the first Opium War, 1839-1842. The acquisition of a “barren rock” was ridiculed by London and English merchants operating in the Far East. The Kowloon Peninsula and Stonecutter’s Island were ceded in 1860, and the so-called New Territories, com-prising most of the mainland of the colony, were leased to Britain for 99 years in 1898.
The legends on Hong Kong coinage are bilingual: English and Chinese. The rare 1941 cent was dispatchsd to Hong Kong In several shipments. One fell into Japanese hands. while another was melted down by the British and a third was sunk dur-ing enemy action.
